Works are progressing well on the underwater excavation works on the new Forth Road Bridge in Scotland. Using the 65 tonne CAT long reach excavator fitted with GPS underwater dig profile equipment, the bridge foundations have to be cut into the rock. Underwater breakers and milling machines have been attached to the machine with the position monitored by the operator in the cab. With a strong tidal current and some extreme weather conditions, this is a really challenging and rewarding project.

The 115 tonne CAT excavator with 30m reach was mobilised to the Port of Southampton for essential maintenance dredging work. Fitted with an underwater GPS dig system the machine was able to ‘spot dredge’ the areas that would pose a problem for ships to berth safely.

March 2012

Construction of the massive Cross Rail Project in London required a number of deep excavations for tunnelling equipment and the new stations. At Tottenham Court Road WM Plant Hire provided their 65 tonne excavator with 24m reach. The machine was selected for its high production and efficiency.

February 2012

The decommissioning of the Bradwell Nuclear Power Station involved the removal of an extensive water intake and outflow structure. Two long reach excavators mounted on self-propelled barges were fitted with GPS dig computers to monitor the excavation and provide ‘as built’ records. The machines used specialist attachments to clear the steel piles of silt allowing divers to have access to dismantle and remove the piles.
